An Intimate History

On September 26, 2018, the presentation of the book “The Ukrainian Night: An Intimate History of Revolution” by Marci Shore, printed by the Publishing House “Dukh i Litera”, was held at the museum of the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

The book came out due to efforts of the chief editor of “Dukh i Litera”, Leonid Finberg, and the director of the Center of European Humanitarian Studies of the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Publishing House “Dukh i Litera”, Kostiantyn Sihov, as gratefully pointed out the author of the book.

Olya Gnatyuk, Polish Scientist in Ukrainian Studies, translator and popularizer of Ukrainian literature, and a staff member of Institute for Slavonic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Oleksandr Butsenko, translator of the book, director of the Development Centre “Democracy through Culture” have taken part in the presentation.

On explaining the idea of book creation, Marci Shore said:  «I decided to paint a portrait of an individual through the experience of revolution to give human features to the revolution”. Oleksandr Butsenko, describing his work of translation has supposed that the book telling about concrete and familiar event, allows us to see wider and global picture to put a question: “And what then?”

For information: Marci Shore is a well-known scientist, Ph.D. in History, associate professor at Yale University. She prefers to examine the interaction between Marxism and phenomenology reviewing the interaction between literature and politics.
